Kozhikode: The 'Vargeeyatha Thulayatte' or 'Down with Communalism' campaign started by Left-leaning outfits after the brutal murder of Abhimanyu, a 20-year-old Students Federation of India (SFI) leader of Maharaja's College, Ernakulam, is gaining traction.

Many activists used their social media profiles with the tagline and some made display pictures to proclaim their stance.

Now, as a counter to the popular tagline, the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has come up with a counter campaign against 'CPIM-Police terror' with the tagline 'Vamseeyathaye Cherukkuka' (Fight racism).

SDPI state secretary Musthafa Kommeri said that the campaign would start from July 20 and continue till July 30.

“Publicity events are being carried out as a build-up for the campaign and the tagline was selected accordingly. SDPI state committee meeting will be be held at Kozhikode on July 12 and the agenda for the 10-day long campaign would be decided after that,” said Musthafa.

He added that though his party men are taken into custody, they were not tortured.

“However the humiliation stays. It is sad to see that many innocent workers are being taken to preventive detention, just for being part of a political organisation. This is not fair,” he added.

Incidentally, the violence at Maharaja's started over booking of wall space. According to sources, the SFI had first 'booked' the wall space, but Campus Front activists wrote its name there.

Without removing the name of Campus Front, the SFI added the word 'communalism' next to it. This provoked the rival camp and eventually led to the murder.
