Thiruvananthapuram: A medical report confirms that severe injuries have been sustained by a policeman, who had alleged he was injured after he was assaulted by the daughter of his superior officer, additional director general of police (ADGP) Sudesh Kumar.

The medical report proves police driver Gavaskar did sustain spinal injuries that will cause pain and inflammation for several weeks. Injuries to his vertebra have been cited in the report.

Gavaskar had claimed that he was hit with a mobile phone behind his neck. His complaint in this respect was initially ignored by the police, which had even proceeded to file a non-bailable case against him.

Sudesh Kumar shunted out

The DGP, meanwhile, summoned leaders of police associations at 10.30 am on Saturday for a discussion, even as it was being alleged that top cops are abusing police personnel like slaves at their houses. Sudesh Kumar has been removed as the head of the Armed Police Battalion. He has not been assigned any new roles.

The incident involving Gavaskar kicked up a row as more police personnel, deployed as camp followers for the personal service of senior officers, have complained against ill-treatment they were facing from the higher-ups and their family members.

Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan had directed DGP Loknath Behera to inquire about complaints that policemen are forced to do menial jobs at the houses of top officers in the force.

Gavaskar, attached to the Special Armed Police (SAP) camp here, has been serving as driver for ADGP Sudesh Kumar.

In his complaint, Gavaskar alleged that the IPS officer's daughter had verbally abused him and hit hard on his neck and shoulder with her mobile phone.

The incident happened when the woman and her mother had gone for a morning walk, according to the complaint.

Irked over the delay in bringing the vehicle, the woman abused the driver and later thrashed him when he requested her to stop the verbal abuse, Gavaskar said in the complaint.

The driver soon sought treatment at a district hospital and lodged a complaint with the police.

According to the police, a case was registered late on Friday night against the ADGP's daughter under various sections of the IPC, including 294-B (verbal abuse), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from performing duty) and 324 (causing hurt using weapon).

A case was also registered against Gavaskar based on a counter petition by the woman under IPC Section 354 (outraging the modesty of woman) and 294-B.
