Not just Nipah, dengue too poses a threat to Kasaragod

Kasaragod: Even as Nipah scare grips Kerala, reports of dengue fever spreading in Kasaragod have emerged.

The number of confirmed dengue fever patients in the district this year has reached 65. According to official figures, 361 fever patients are undergoing treatment. At least 28 patients have been admitted in Kanhangad district hospital alone.

During the last one week, 10 patients suffering from dengue sought treatment at the Kasaragod general hospital. Among them, seven are still undergoing treatment.

Meanwhile, the cause of the death of Suhara (45), belonging to Bekkur in Mangalpady, reported the other day has now been confirmed as dengue. With Suhara’s death, the number of lives claimed by dengue in the district has gone up to three.

Initially, dengue was reported from the hilly areas of Kasaragod district. However, it is suspected that the fever has now spread to places like Badiyadukka, Mangalpady and Kasaragod town.

The outbreak of Nipah virus in neighbouring Kozhikode has so far claimed three lives, while one person is undergoing treatment and eight are under observation. Nipah virus, spread by fruit bats, infects both animals and humans. The state has been put on a high alert and people are being educated to ensure that they do not eat any fruits that fall down from trees.
