Power output likely to fall as overhaul of generators at Idukki plant drags on

Thodupuzha: Power production in the state may go down considerably on account of delay in the modernisation of the three generators at the Idukki Power Station.

The overhaul of the third generator at the power plant had started last year and it was scheduled to finish by last month, but the work is currently only at the half-way stage.

The delay didn't cause any power shortages in the state so far as minor power projects had adequate water for production. Moreover, the purchase of power from outside the state continued.

However, the delay in modernising the generators is a concern. The KSEB authorities hope to tide over any shortfall in power production in the future by sourcing from outside.

It was planned to recondition the three generators in three years by mending one every year. Currently, the modernisation works of the third generator is on.

The three generators that are to be overhauled produce 130 MW power each.

GE Power India Ltd has taken the work contract for Rs 47.84 crore. The whole job has to be finished in 42 months as per the deal. As per the terms, the overhaul of the third generator had to be finished by February 2018, and thereafter, the other two generators had to be taken up.
