BJP picks Sreedharan Pillai for Chengannur by-poll

Sreedharan Pillai is considered as a popular leader in the constituency where he had polled over 45,000 votes in the last assembly elections.

Chengannur: The election scenario in Chengannur has become clear with the BJP picking veteran leader P S Sreedharan Pillai as its candidate. The BJP central election committee made the decision on Thursday bringing an end to speculations.

Sreedharan Pillai is considered as a popular leader in the constituency where he had polled over 40,000 votes in the last assembly elections.

The by-polls in Chengannur was necessitated with the death of CPM's K K Ramacahandran Nair. Though BJP has been trying to put up a tough battle in the constituency, the decision by its ally BDJS not to back the party in the by-poll is likely to affect its prospects there.

Congress leader D Vijayakumar is the UDF's candidate while the LDF has fielded CPM district secretary Saji Cherian.
