Court tells man to return Rs 63 lakh, 65 sovereigns of gold to wife

Thodupuzha: A court ordered a man to pay back Rs 63 lakh and 65 sovereigns of gold to his wife and told him to keep away from the house she built on a small plot of land co-owned by him. Lisamma, a nurse who had worked in Delhi and Saudi Arabia for the better part of her life, received the reprieve from the family court after she filed a case accusing her husband and his mother of squandering her savings.

The Thodupuzha court ordered the husband, Jolly Koottunkal from Vannappuram, to return the assets including the 50 sovereigns of gold and Rs 5 lakh he had received at the time of his wedding. He had also taken hold of the money Lisamma earned and the gold she bought after the marriage. The assets include the proceeds from a sale of real estate in 2006 and 2009.

The court ordered Jolly to pay the money and gold back within six months, if he did not want to see his parents’ property attached.

Though Jolly had filed a divorce petition, the court rejected the plea because Lisamma did not agree to it.
