Kochi: Doctors at the Lisie Hospital carried out a six-hour surgery on a one-month-old boy to fix a serious heart condition.
The child, whose parents are from Tanur in Malappuram, was brought to the hospital on Thursday evening from Kozhikode Medical College.
The boy, who had defects in the blood vessels of the heart, was also suffering from pneumonia.
The doctors had first decided to conduct the surgery after two days, but his condition deteriorated Friday morning, forcing them to carry it out immediately.
Dr Thomas Mathew, Dr Edwin Francis, Dr C Subramanian, Dr Annu Jose and Dr V Bijesh of the pediatric surgery department oversaw the process.
Giving support were senior doctors Jose Chacko Periappuram, Dr Rony Mathew Kadavil and Dr Jacob Abraham.
The surgery was conducted under the state government’s Hridyam scheme, which offers free treatment to children born with serious congenital heart diseases.
