Kalady: Now, there will be light at night too at the homes in the Peringalkuthu tribal colony.
A group of students from Kalady Adi Shankara Engineering College has installed solar panels in order to provide free electricity to the tribal colony at the Athirapally Vazhachal area. All households have also been provided an emergency light each.
Since there was no electricity, about 40 families in the colony used to rely on oil lamps at night. Overhead power lines were not considered for the colony due to the likely risk from trees and tree branches falling on them and causing danger to human beings and animals. Besides, there was threat from wild elephants.
These factors led to keeping electricity away from the colony. Come evening and the residents of the colony stay put in their shacks. The students of the B.Tech electronics and communication programme of the college came know about their plight and decided to help. They got support from the teachers too and together they raised necessary funds for the project. They also provided food items to the colony residents.
The solar project was inaugurated by Thrissur sub-collector Renu Raj, while Athirapally panchayat president Thankamma Varghese gave away the emergency lights. College principal Dr P.C. Neelakantan presided over the function and DFO N. Rajesh, Athirapally forest range officer Mohammed Rafi, SI K. Babu spoke.
