Kalpatta: A retired teacher who grabbed headlines after giving birth to a child at the age of 62 passed away at the age of 76. Bhavani Amma, who hails from Kavumkara in Muvattupuzha, died at the DM Wims Hospital in Meppadi Monday early morning.

The teacher had been subject of much social attention after she delivered a test tube baby in her advanced age. The child, Kannan, did not survive beyond 18 months.

Kannan was born on April 14, 2004. Kannan fell into a vessel-full of water in the courtyard of his house and met with a tragic end.

Bhavani Amma had conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF) at the Samad Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram.

An orphaned Bhavani Amma kept shifting places after the tragedy and had been living in Wayanad for sometime now. She was teaching to eke out a living and was staying at a rented house in Manathavady when she fell ill and shifted to the Peace Village in Pinangod, Wayanad, as an inmate.

Bhavani Amma had married a second time at the insistence of her first husband. But she didn't have a child from the second marriage either. Bhavani Amma then prompted her husband to marry another woman. After she was refused permission to see that child, Bhavani Amma approached Samad Hospital for a baby of her own.
