Thrissur: All patients at the Sun Medical and Research Centre in Thrissur were evacuated after a fire broke out in the early hours of Friday.

The fire originated from a room in the first floor where old computers and electronic equipment were stored. The panic run started when smoke billowed out to the patients’ rooms and wards soon after midnight.

Police and fire force teams rushed to the hospital and evacuated about 130 patients, including those on life support, with help from nurses and volunteers. The last patient was moved out around 4 am.

The fire might have been sparked by a short circuit, initial estimates suggest. The police have started a probe. The blaze has been brought under control.
