As the counting of votes for the 18th Lok Sabha Elections 2024 progresses, the BJP-led NDA is setting the course for a third consecutive term with Narendra Modi as the prime minister. While the BJP is leading in 293 seats, the opposition INDIA bloc is not far behind in 233 seats. Check State Wise Results, here.
The results felt short of BJP's expectation of winning over 400 seats.
Uttar Pradesh
The country's most politically significant state, which sends 80 MPs to the Lok Sabha, and considered to be th BJP's bastion, was poised to be the game changer.
The INDIA bloc was leading in 44 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh and the BJP-led NDA in 35, according to trends on the Election Commission website. INDIA bloc parties SP and Congress were leading in 37 and seven seats, respectively, the election panel's data for polls to the 80 parliamentary constituencies in the state showed. The BJP was leading in 33 seats and its allies Rashtriya Lok Dal and Apna Dal in one seat each.
Among the prominent leaders who have taken comfortable leads over their rivals includes Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Lucknow, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and his wife Dimple Yadav in Kannauj and Mainpuri, Congress candidates Rahul Gandhi and Kishori Lal Sharma in Rae Bareli and Amethi. Senior BJP leaders Smriti Irani, Ajay Mishra Teni and Maneka Gandhi were trailing in the Amethi, Kheri, and Sultanpur while Anupriya Patel of the Apna Dal(S) is leading in the Mirzapur constituency.
In the Faizabad seat in Ayodhya district, BJP's Lallu Singh was trailing by 85,12 votes against SP's Awadhesh Prasad. The construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya was cited as an achievement by the BJP leaders during the election campaign.
Bihar
While Nitish Kumar's JDU, which jumped ship from INDIA bloc, was leading in 15 seats, the BJP was ahead in 13 seats. The INDIA bloc was leading in nine seats. In the 2019, the NDA swept Bihar, winning 39 out of the 40 seats. The BJP won 17 seats, JDU claimed 16, and LJP secured six seats. Congress managed to win just one seat, while the RJD, led by Tejashwi Yadav, failed to win any.
Maharashtra
The BJP-engineered split in the NCP and the Shiv Sena that saw the coalition government losing majority in Maharashtra seems to have not helped the saffron camp in the Lok Saba election. While the INDIA bloc managed to take decisive leads in 28 seats, the NDA only managed to lead in 19 constituencies.
In poll drubbing, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) led by Ajith Pawar was leading only in one seat, and the Nationalist Congress Party – Sharadchandra Pawar led in seven seats.
Similarly, the breakaway faction of Shiv Sena, which formed the state government with the BJP after the split, was leading in six seats compared to the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackrey) which was leading in 10 seats. BJP was leading in 12 seats.
Andhra Pradesh
Five years after suffering a humiliating defeat at the hands of a much younger Jagan Mohan Reddy, TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday was on course to lead his party towards a landslide victory in the Andhra Pradesh assembly polls, with the allies BJP and Janasena Party (JNP) in tow. Naidu's latest electoral triumph, where his Telugu Desam Party was ahead in 130 of the 175 seats as per latest figures, comes months after his arrest in an alleged corruption case. In the outgoing House, TDP has only 23 members.
Telangana
The ruling Congress and BJP continued their lead in eight seats each out of the 17 Lok Sabha seats in Telangana as per the trends at 1.30 pm on Tuesday. The Congress nominees were leading in Peddapalle (SC), Mahabubabad (ST), Warangal (SC), Bhongir, Khammam, Nalgonda, Nagarkurnool (SC) and Zaheerabad, according to Election Commission website.
Karnataka
The BJP yielded ground to the Congress on Tuesday, as the ruling party in Karnataka is on course to boost its Lok Sabha seats tally to 10, as per the latest counting trends. The BJP was ahead in 16 seats -- down from 25 in 2019 Lok Sabha elections -- while its NDA partner JD(S) was projected to win in two constituencies, according to Election Commission officials.
Kerala
Deeper south in Kerala, the BJP has made its electoral entry in Thirssur constituency riding on the popularity of actor-turned-politician Suresh Gopi. The UDF is leading in 17 seats and the LDF in 2 seats of Attingal and Alathur.
Tamil Nadu seemed to be scripting another story, not ceding any space to the saffron party. The ruling DMK was ahead in 20 and the Congress in eight, exactly where they were in 2019.
Odisha
In Odisha, the BJP was leading in 19 of the 21 Lok Sabha seats in Odisha, election officials said. BJD candidate is leading in one seat and Congress nominee in one constituency.
Commencing on April 19, voting spanned across 543 constituencies in seven phases during this general election. The voter turnout in the seven phases stood at 66.14, 66.71, 65.68, 69.16, 62.2, 63.36 and 62 per cent, respectively. The BJP candidates are ahead in Berhampur, Aska, Puri, Jagtsinghpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sambalpur, Sundergarh, Bargarh, Bolangir, Nabarangpur and Kalahandi Lok Sabha seats.
Delhi
The BJP was leading in all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi on Tuesday, with Manoj Tiwari leading by a margin of over 43,000 votes, according to Election Commission trends. The BJP is in a direct contest with the Congress-AAP alliance in the national capital. The BJP had won all seven seats in Delhi in the 2014 and 2019 general elections.
Rajasthan
The BJP had won all the 25 seats in Rajasthan in the last two Lok Sabha elections, but the trends in these polls show the party's tally coming down by more than 10 seats. With trends showing the BJP ahead on 14 of the total 25 seats in Rajasthan, state Cabinet minister Kirodi Lal Meena Tuesday indicated he would keep his word on resigning from the post if his party loses any of the seven seats under his responsibility.
Madhya Pradesh
The BJP was ahead in all 29 Lok Sabha seats in Madhya Pradesh, with Union Ministers Jyotiraditya Scindia and Faggan Singh Kulaste establishing clear leads in their constituencies, as per trends available so far of vote counting underway on Tuesday. Congress veteran Digvijaya Singh was trailing in Rajgarh, where Rodmal Nagar was leading over him by a margin of 71,819 votes, as per the latest official figures. In Indore, BJP candidate Shankar Lalwani is leading by a margin of record 9,49,380 votes, while NOTA has got 1,99,911 votes so far, breaking a record.
Punjab and Haryana
In Punjab, the INDIA bloc is leading in 7 seats and AAP in 3. In Haryana, The NDA and INDIA bloc have tied in 5 seats each.
All North East states, except Assam shy away from BJP
In Assam, the ruling BJP and its allies the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United Peoples' Party Liberal (UPPL) were leading in 10 Lok Sabha seats, while the Congress was ahead in four, the Election Commission said.
The NDA alliance in the state contested all the 14 seats, with the BJP in 11 and the Congress, a constituent of the 16-party United Opposition Forum Assam (UOFA), in 13. It left the Dibrugarh seat for the Assam Jatiya Parishad while the AIUDF contested in three and AAP in two. In the outgoing Lok Sabha, BJP held nine seats, Congress three, AIUDF and an independent one each from the state.
