New Delhi: As many as 20.2 crore spam calls, mostly for advertising purposes, were made from just one phone number in India this year. This means that one particular phone number was able to disturb over 664,000 people every day and 27,000 people every hour.
The annual Global Spam Report published by Truecaller this year revealed this interesting piece of information about spam calls in India. Truecaller is the top global online platform for verifying contacts and blocking unwanted communication.
But the Truecaller did not reveal which company had indulged in making huge spam calls. The Truecaller also flayed the practice of telecom companies allowing indiscriminate use of spam calls.
It noted that such spam calls were made with the help of advanced software. Automated and cloud telephone networks are specifically used for this purpose.
India ranks fifth in spam calls
The report further highlights that globally, Truecaller has identified 3779.99 crore spam calls and 18200 crore spam SMSes. India now holds 5th position in Truecaller’s list of the most spammed countries in the world. In 2020, India's position was 9th in the world. Brazil tops the list now. In India, a person on an average receives more than 16 spam calls per month. In October itself, there were around 380 crore spam calls in India.
About 93.5 per cent of spam calls were received from sales and telephone marketing sectors. Truecaller also mentions that scam calls are now less in India and it stands at 1.4 per cent. The most common scam calls in the country were in the form of asking for KYC details or OTPs.
