Hyderabad: In a compassionate gesture, a woman constable breastfed an infant, crying uncontrollably after her mother in an alleged inebriated state, abandoned it with a stranger here.
Priyanka, who was on maternity leave, fed the 18-month old baby girl at the Afzalgunj police station on the request of her constable husband posted there.
Soon after the child was fed, it stopped crying following which it was shifted to the Government Maternity Hospital, Petlaburz, police said in a release.
The baby was handed over to the police station by a man, to whom the woman had given the baby on Sunday night and vanished, telling him she would be back after drinking water.
Earlier, the man had taken the child to his house and vainly tried to feed it milk from a sachet.
He then informed his relatives and friends and they took the baby to the police station and handed it over to the constable.
The woman, who was later located by police, told them that she handed over the baby to the man at Osmania General Hospital (OGH) here Sunday night after telling him she would soon be back after drinking water.
But she could not remember the spot where she handed over her baby as she was 'drunk' at that time, police said.
The woman was later taken to the Maternity hospital, where she identified her child and it was handed over.
