A shore where rain washes down, spreading a blood-red hue. Small and large streams of blood-red water flow into the sea. This is how a seashore in Iran astonished tourists and social media alike. With many parts of the world witnessing various natural disasters, some even suspected this to be the beginning of the end of the world. However, the event was nothing like that. It was merely a natural phenomenon following heavy rains at Hormuz Red Beach.

Several videos of this phenomenon are circulating on social media. This seashore is located on Rainbow Island in the Hormuz strait. Compared to other beaches, it has unusually red soil. When heavy rain lashed down on this soil, the rain water mixed with the soil turned blood-red. As rainwater cascaded down from large red clay cliffs near the seashore and mixed with the sea, the waves breaking on the shore also appeared red.

The soil at Red Beach contains high levels of iron and other minerals. According to information from the Iranian Tourism Board, the high concentration of iron oxide in the soil is responsible for the red colour. In addition, the minerals in the soil mix with seawater during high tide, making the unique red colour of the seashore visible. The sight of the soil flowing like blood during rainfall is a yearly occurrence.

This unique soil with many special properties is used for various industrial purposes, including cosmetics, dyeing, ceramics, and glass manufacturing, according to information from the local tourism department. The peculiar colour of the soil makes the seashore breathtakingly beautiful during sunrise and sunset. However, it is the "blood rain" that attracts the most people. Tourists from all over the world come here just to witness this spectacle of colour mixing into the sea.
