Perinthalmanna: Ruby, the Pomeranian dog, is now an icon of perseverance and survival for the people of this quaint village. The dog managed to survive ten days in an unused well before it was rescued. The entire village had been looking for Ruby while she was stuck in the well covered with bushes and creepers.

Ruby is the beloved pet dog of Sujith and his family in the village Thootha. Usually, Ruby opens the kennel door herself to get out, and she always returns on her own. Ten days ago, on a rainy day, Ruby disappeared, leaving the family members distressed. Soon, her family and neighbours began searching for Ruby. The news of her disappearance spread on social media too, inspiring everyone in the village to look for her.

Finally, Sujith received a phone call saying that a dog’s barking and whimpering sound could be heard from an unused well in a deserted house in the region. Sujith rushed to the spot and found his Ruby stuck in the well. Sujith and his neighbours tried to bring Ruby up; however, they couldn’t do it as the well was covered with thick bushes. So, they informed the fire and rescue services. The trauma care volunteers got inside the well, tied a rope around Ruby’s feet, and gently pulled her up.

Riyasudden, coordinator of Palakkad trauma care unit, Cherpulassery unit members Muhammad Ali, Manu, Jamshad, Perinthalmanna station unit lead Shuhaib Mattaya, deputy leader Jabbar Jubilee, secretary Favas Mankada and Gireesh Keezhatoor headed the rescue operation.
