Unni Mukundan is one of the few Malayalam actors who are passionate about maintaining enviable fitness. For various movies, he has built his body, put on weight to look the part, and shared the journey with his fans. His latest film, in which he seems ultimately ripped and fabulous, is the action flick Marco, directed by Haneef Adeni. The audience has praised the actor’s incredible screen presence and agility, especially in various sequences. Meanwhile, Unni shared a video of him doing pull-ups on Marco's sets on his social media handle. Pull-ups are an upper body strength exercise which can be done only by someone who is really strong and fit. As Unni is seen working out on the film set, he wears prosthetic makeup of blood oozing out of a wound on his chest. The video can surely take aback those who do not recognise it as prosthetic material. Meanwhile, Unni’s pull-up video has grabbed more than 3 million views.
Why actors do pull-ups before action sequences
Pull-ups are a classic exercise to build upper body strength as you lift your body using your hands. If not done properly, this exercise could lead to injuries. Many actors, especially action performers, do pull-ups or other quick workouts before their action sequences for these reasons:
1) Increase their focus
Physical activities like pull-ups cause an adrenaline rush, giving them an alertness and sharpness to stay focussed during their action shoots. They can also give the actors a better, more defined look on their frames, making them appear a lot more impressive while performing. It can also improve their posture and help strike a commanding stance.
2) Reduce injuries
While shooting action scenes, actors often have to perform sudden moves with a lot of force, which can cause injuries. If they have done some quick workouts before 'action,' their body can be much more prepared to take the actions coming their way. It can also increase muscle elasticity, enhance joint mobility, and minimise muscle stiffness.
3) Avoid pre-shoot nerves
Between various takes of action shoots, often there are long breaks. However, they must avoid the pre-shoot jitters to perform well, alleviate performance anxiety and give their best. 'Snack workouts' like a few push-ups and pull-ups can serve this purpose and keep them ready for the action as soon as their crew is.
