Director Shyam Benegal passed away on Monday at the age of 90 in Mumbai. His daughter said that the veteran filmmaker had been battling Chronic Kidney Disease, aka CKD, for the past many years. It's a condition that gradually declines the functioning of kidneys over time. Those suffering from CKD lose their kidneys' capacity to filter waste and fluids from their blood, eventually leading to the accumulation of waste and electrolytes in their body. Last year, both his kidneys failed, after which he depended on dialysis treatments at home to manage the disease. CKD generally increases the risk of other health issues also, like stroke and heart disease. Generally, the disease is divided into five stages, depending on the level of kidney damage.
According to the National Kidney Foundation, many people with this condition do not have any symptoms until complications develop.
However, here are a few signs to look out for:
1) Loss of appetite
2) Peeing less or more than often
3) Foamy urine
4) Exhaustion
5) Nausea
6) Losing excessive weight
7) Ammonia-like breath
8) Difficulty in sleeping
9) Numbness in various parts of the body
10) Shortness of breath
How to avoid CKD?
A few strategies can be implemented to reduce the risk of developing CKD, which are:
1) Controlling high blood pressure and diabetes
2) Ensuring a regular kidney-friendly diet, reducing salt intake, high-sodium foods and vegetable-rich food
3) Avoid excessive protein intake
4) Ensure proper hydration
5) Avoid overuse of painkillers
