However, these days, health experts warn against consuming such hot beverages often, as it could pose serious risks. They say that regular consumption of hot tea and coffee could lead to cancer in mouth and oesophagus. Doctors say these hot beverages could adversely affect the cell turnover, increasing the risk of cancer. They can also apparently cause swelling in the oesophagus as well as cell disruption. Drinks that are above 65 degree Celsius or 149 degree Fahrenheit are generally considered dangerous. Besides hot beverages, smoking, alcohol consumption and poor oral health too could lead to mouth or oesophageal cancer.
How to make them healthy?
1)Doctors say that drinking tea and coffee when they are warm and not scalding hot could reduce the health risks.
2) You can also add healthier ingredients like ginger, cinnamon and honey to both enhance health benefits and add taste.
3) If you don’t mind replacing the regular tea with herbal options like chamomile, peppermint or green tea, there are also other health benefits like improved digestion and antioxidants supply.
4) These days, decaffeinated versions of tea and coffee blends are also available in markets. Discuss with your dietician or doctor to see whether you can use them instead of the regular powders to make your favourite drink.
5) If you have no allergy against them, consider using plant-based milks for your tea or coffee. Almond milk, oat milk or coconut milk are not only lower in calories, but can also give you essential fibre and healthy fats too in your coffee or tea.
