Kerala State Fisheries Department recently said that the state's biggest fish are in Malampuzha Dam. The dam has Catla fish that weighs more than 50 kgs and the biggest catla caught yet is 52 kgs. Did you know that the fish, which is most popular in West Bengal, Odisha, Assam and Bihar holds a special place in the region's culinary traditions? Moreover, it is also popular in Kerala now and is a popular pick among the weight watchers as well due to its high protein content. Being low in calories, it is also steamed, grilled, baked, stir-fried and even added in salads and soups that are part of the diets followed by gym goers. Here are a few other reasons why the fish is part of weight-loss diets.
1) Used instead of red meat
Catla fish is often prescribed by nutritionists as a healthy alternative for red and processed meats. It is also low in saturated fat, caloric density, and has omega-3 fatty acids that are good for cardiac health. The presence of vitamins d, B 12, phosphorous and selenium are added benefits.
2) Makes you feel full
Catla curbs the cravings due to the presence of protein and fatty acids. It can also make meals flavourful and help you to develop a healthy metabolism. Regardless, catla lovers say it retains the energy levels as well.
3) Improves skin
Many people worry about losing the glow of their skin during weight loss. But, if catla is part of your diet, its nutrients retain moisture in your skin. It will also reduce the hormone cortisol in your body, which will aid in stress reduction.
4) Good for bones and muscles
Recovery is an important part of working out and weight loss, and catla has minerals like calcium and phosphorus which will help you with the same. It will also help maintain a lean muscle mass and reduce the risk of anaemia.
