Njaaval, jamun aka java plum is a fruit that's widely available in India, especially during the monsoon season. The tree bears fruit between June and August, and it has a combination of sweet and tangy flavour. It is rich in vitamin C, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, antioxidants, dietary fibre, and resistant starch that promotes gut health. As they reach their optimal flavour this season, they will also be a delightful treat to enjoy with your friends or family. However, what's the best way to have the fruit, so that you get its maximum health benefits? Here are some tips:
Jamun with a light salad dressing
Make a salad out of jamun, spinach or kale, nuts, seeds, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, cheese, walnuts, basil leaves and salt pepper. Make a dressing out of two tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice, honey and salt. Not only is it visually appealing, but its crispy texture, creaminess and nutrients can make it a delightful snack too.
Fruit infused water
Add a few sliced, deseeded fruits into a jug of water. You can also add mint or lemon as per your preference. Refrigerate it for a while to let the flavours infuse, and enjoy the beverage. If you prefer, you can also add a spoonful of chia seeds to the drink.
Prepare soups
Prepare soup combining pureed jamun fruit with carrots, celery, onions, vegetable broth and seasonings. It is good for digestive health, provides ample fibre and is good for the skin too.
The fruit as it is
The fruit can also be enjoyed as a healthy snack as it's a low-calorie, high-fibre option. You can also sprinkle a pinch of salt as this will enhance its sweetness. Chaat masala is another means to bring out its flavours.
