The rainy season is a welcome relief for Keralites from the prolonged summer season, but it arrives with a set of health challenges. With the increase in moisture and humidity, you can be prone to a higher risk of infections for waterborne diseases, colds, flu and other ailments. The weather can also weaken our immunity response and lower our sunlight exposure, leading to a host of other issues. Here are a few drinks you can easily prepare and have at home, to boost your immunity, alkalize your body and promote detoxification.
Herbal teas: You can make teas with ingredients like ginger, turmeric, tulsi, lemongrass, cinnamon, mint and Brahmi. All you will need are two cups of water, two teaspoons of your preferred herbs and spices and optional sweeteners like honey or jaggery. You can boil the water add the herbs, strain the tea, sweeten it and have it hot to enjoy the flavourful goodness.
Manjal paal aka 'turmeric latte': A great drink to have at bedtime, 'manjal paal,' 'haldi doodh' or 'turmeric latte.' Can be easily made at home by boiling milk and adding a pinch of turmeric once it reaches boiling point. If required, you can add a dash of honey too. It can relieve cold and flu symptoms, warm your body, promote relaxation and sleep, and even support your joint health in the rainy season.
Low-calorie soups: Not only are they nutrient-dense, they are also good for digestive health and weight management during the rainy season. Vegetable clear soups made of carrots, celery, onions, bell peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms, broccoli, lentils, and spinach can provide the required warmth and comfort, relax tense muscles, reduce the risk of illnesses and support your immune functions.
Warm water with lemon, and honey: The easiest yet soothing, refreshing drink, warm water with a squeeze of lemon and a dash of honey can help aid digestion and promote hydration. Hot kanji water, infused with spices or herbs of your choice, can also provide the nutrition for the required energy this season.
