The liver is the largest organ in the human body and carries out more than 500 vital functions. The organ performs a multitude of 'duties' including filtration of blood, removal of harmful substances and protein synthesis, among others. It’s very important to take of care of the liver as a healthy and disease-free liver will help a person to lead a long and robust life. On World Liver Day, it's important to note that nearly 20 lakh people die every year globally due to live-related ailments, and in India, one in five people has liver disease. Many liver-related diseases can be avoided if you can change your lifestyle for the better. Let’s take a glance at what should be done to have a healthy liver.
1) First and foremost, shun alcohol. The liver damage could be minimized if you could curb the drinking habit to 30ml (women) and 60ml (men). If you have liver disease, don’t ever think of having alcohol.
2) Make sure to maintain an ideal body weight especially to avoid non-alcoholic fatty liver. The fat deposits in the stomach and excessive weight gain increase the chances of developing a fatty liver. It is important to include fruits, vegetables and foods with a lot of fibre in your diet. And avoid high-calorie and fatty food, processed carbohydrates such as oil, ghee and cheese, and sugary drinks.
3) The hepatitis B and C viruses can be transmitted fast through unprotected sex and the use of certain medicines. Persons with multiple partners are also at the risk of contracting such liver diseases. Avoid such practices to keep viral hepatitis at bay.
4) Hygiene plays a vital role in keeping your liver in good shape. Make it a habit to wash hands after using the bathroom and before having food and cooking food. Hepatitis A and E can be prevented by developing this habit. Never share personal things such as shaving blades, toothbrushes and needles and this can prevent the spread of hepatitis B and C.
5) Consult a doctor periodically to ensure that the liver is in the pink of health. A medical examination should be conducted if symptoms of liver disease surface. Periodic medical check-up is needed if you had hepatitis B and C infection in the past, if you are alcoholic, if you are obese or diabetic, or if you have a history of liver disease in your family.
