Kollam: As the heatwave has soared to 40 degrees Celsius, authorities have warned people to be careful and strictly follow the directives to avoid sunburns, sunstroke, dehydration and several other health issues. This is also in the light of many districts experiencing high temperatures on consecutive days and being given 'Yellow Alerts.' These are some of the healthcare directives issued by the district administration:
)Do not let the sun's rays hit your body directly between 11 am and 3 pm.
)Drink lots of water even if you are not thirsty.
)It is better to stay away from drinks like alcohol, coffee, tea and carbonated drinks that may cause dehydration.
)Try wearing loose cotton outfits.
)Always wear sandals when you go out. Do not forget to carry hats or umbrellas.
)Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. You could also sip on ORS solution or buttermilk.
)Proper fire audits should be done at markets, buildings and dumping yards that are prone to fire breakouts to ensure safety. Those who live or run businesses close to these should be vigilant.
)Summer is the time when forest fires become common. So, those who live close to the forest and tourists should be careful. The instructions issued by the forest department should be strictly followed.
)Media persons and police personnel working outdoors should carry umbrellas and avoid direct exposure to sunlight.
)The organisers of public meetings and other events should ensure drinking water facilities and shade for the attendees. However, it is better to avoid such public events between 11 am and 3 pm.
)Construction workers, agricultural labourers and other people who indulge in outdoor activities or jobs should reschedule their working hours.
)Do not let the cattle graze during the noon time. Other pet animals too shouldn’t be tied outside in the sun. Make sure to provide water for animals and birds.
)Do not leave children or pet animals unattended inside vehicles.
