Do you experience pain after sex? If so, be cautious; it could be the symptom of dyspareunia, which is more common in women. Mumbai sex health expert, Dr. Deepak Jumani, explains that severe pain before or after sexual intercourse is a primary symptom of the condition. While this pain typically manifests in the genital area, it can also be felt internally in the vagina.
It is characterised by a persistent burning sensation or discomfort post-sex. However, doctors note that there are numerous physical and psychological factors contributing to this condition, such as inadequate lubrication, infections, burning sensations, wounds, and low estrogen levels. Severe pain may also indicate underlying conditions like endometriosis, ovarian cysts, fibroids, or cancer.
Additionally, taking antihistamine tablets for allergies or persistent colds can sometimes trigger dyspareunia. In men, dyspareunia symptoms typically occur around ejaculation. Lack of lubrication, wounds, and infections can also be contributing factors.
How can it be prevented?
The primary cause of this condition is often a lack of lubrication. Those who do not naturally produce enough lubrication would benefit from seeking remedies. Hence, doctors emphasize the importance of foreplay. Dyspareunia symptoms may also be an initial indication of another underlying condition. Therefore, if in doubt, it is advisable to promptly consult a doctor. Experimenting with different sex positions can also be helpful.
