The summer season is back in Kerala with all its might and six districts - Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kannur, Alappuzha, Kottayam and Kozhikode are on a yellow alert for high temperatures for the next few days. Authorities say that the temperatures can go up to 37 degrees in these districts and if not careful, exposure to sunlight can result in sunstroke, sunburn and dehydration. Here are the things you should know to stay safe and healthy in extreme heat conditions. 

How to stay safe?
As much as possible, stay indoors till 3 pm on the days of extreme heat warnings. If you have to go out, make sure you don't get directly exposed to the sunlight. Use sun protection with high SPF (sun protection factor), umbrellas, hats and sunglasses to protect your face, eyes and body from harmful rays. Seek shade whenever possible and take frequent breaks in air-conditioned or cool spaces.

Who should be alert?
Senior citizens, pregnant women, patients, children and specially-abled people should be extra alert to stay away from the heat, according to the Health Department of Kerala. Individuals who work outdoors, like construction or agriculture workers and vendors should avoid continuous and prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures, especially around noon time. 

What to avoid?
Avoid thick garments, dark-coloured clothes, tight-fitting, synthetic, thick-layered fabrics, high-necked tops, turtlenecks and tight footwear. Instead, go for breathable, lightweight clothing. Also, avoid chunky jewellery, thick belts and bulky bags.

What to feed your body?
Make sure you eat food with high water content like fruits, buttermilk and cooling herbs. Drink as much water as possible. If you sweat a lot, make sure you drink salted rice water and lime water. Also, opt for easily digestible, light meals. 

When to get medical help?
If you experience excessive sweating, tiredness, dizziness, sunburn, skin discolouration, increased heartbeats, and red marks on your skin, they can be a symptoms of heat stroke. Ensure the required medical intervention if you feel the need.
