Meitra Hospital located in Kozhikode has launched one of the most advanced and comprehensive stroke care centre. The importance of a dedicated stroke care centre is underlined by the fact that globally one in four adults over the age of 25 have a stroke in their lifetime, according to a study. They will require prompt medical care after a stroke, especially in the golden hour, that is the hour immediately after the stroke that can make a huge difference, in terms of minimizing the after-effects of a stroke and can even be the difference between life and death.

The Meitra Advanced Stroke Care Centre (MASC) is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, 24-7 availability of Neurologists and stroke care specialists who ensure a systematic treatment pathway for all stroke patients. Dr Deep P Pillai, an eminent stroke specialist and Interventional Neurologist will be in-charge of the centre supported by the neurology team comprising of Dr Sachin Sureshbabu, Dr Krishnadas NC and Dr Poornima Narayanan. As part of the launch four separate segments of the stroke centre will be operational.

Firstly, the Acute Stoke Treatment Unit (ASTU) - which is a dedicated facility located in the emergency department. This unit under the leadership of Dr Farhan Yasi (HOD - Emergency Medicine) will ensure rapid, hurdle-free and streamlined management of all patients presenting with acute stroke. Radiology protocols including the Rapid AI software will be used for the selection of patients for interventions like intravenous thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy (The procedure for removing blood clots from arteries).

The Stroke Unit is a four-bedded semi-intensive care unit with dedicated stroke nurses and neuromonitoring protocols for the in-patient management of stroke patients, after their immediate management is completed from the ASTU.

The stroke Prevention clinic is a proactive effort to identify and modify risk factors to prevent a future stroke. In this clinic, patients will first be assessed for their stroke risk and advised on preventive strategies to minimize their chances of stroke.

Finally, the Stroke volunteer programme is a specially designed year-round teaching exercise which aims to train individuals on prevention, identification and early treatment of stroke. This is aimed at better equipping the community-at-large to fight stroke.
