Cerebral palsy is caused by infections or disorders of the brain before or during birth or immediately after birth. It is mainly a problem that affects the movement of muscles. Along with it, there may be diseases like epilepsy or behavioral problems, vision and hearing problems, or mental retardation. Cerebral palsy is not a condition that can be treated with medication.
However, medications may be needed to control accompanying behaviour problems and seizures and to relax muscles. Children with cerebral palsy need remedial training such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. These remedial exercises should be started as early as possible and done without delay. However, training can be beneficial at any age.
The children should also be aware of its necessity. When they are made aware of the problem as well as the solution according to their intellectual capacity the children should find it easier to be independent. They should be taught the necessary life skills (considering the severity of mobility issues). Adolescence is the time when most worry about one's bodies.
They should be convinced of their abilities. They should be able to build confidence as well as be given emotional and psychological support. They should also be given enough opportunities to interact with their peers. Children should be made to feel that they are not alone.
