Kidney stones are being reported by an increasing number of youths and middle-aged people these days and the situation is a cause for concern, according to doctors. Medical practitioners point out that kidneys stones are formed due to several reasons, including insufficient water intake. This is because many people working in air-conditioned offices do not feel thirst.
If such easy-to-solve issues can be tackled, you can effortlessly prevent the formation of kidney stones, say doctors. Here are some suggestions from them:
Drink enough water
The first step to avoid kidney stones is of course to drink as much water as the body requires. Apart from plain water, fruit juices, tea or coffee too can be preferred. However, keep away from artificial drinks like soda which increase the workload of the kidneys. Moreover, cola and similar beverages are also not recommended.
Eat citrus fruits
Fruits containing citric acid like orange and lemon are good for healthy kidneys. The citric acid prevents the formation of stones as well as checks their growth. Ideally, a glass of lemon juice goes a long way in tackling the problem of kidney stones.
Be alert on Vitamin C supplements
Some amount of caution has to be exercised regarding Vitamin C supplements. They should not be taken without a doctor’s advice. This is because Vitamin C supplements have been found to spur formation of kidney stones. However, Vitamin C absorbed by the body from food is safe.
Calcium intake
Include food containing Calcium in the daily meals. There is a misconception that Calcium leads to the formation of stones in kidneys. The reality is that Calcium derived from food is beneficial. Foods that can provide Calcium include milk, milk products and eggs. Doctors suggest an intake of 1,000 mg Calcium per day for men and 1,200 mg for women.
Reduce salt consumption
Another major cause of kidney stones is salt. Always remain alert over this matter and ensure that excess amount of salt is not consumed. Eatables like pickles, dried fish and packaged snacks contain large amounts of salt.
