Bathrooms have perhaps become the spaces where the most variety of trends is being embraced in the field of home construction. There have been significant changes in the design of bathrooms, which used to be just facilities for basic needs. In today's busy times, bathrooms have transformed into rooms where people spend more time.
These new-generation bathrooms are a hallmark of modern homes in Kerala. The change in size of bathrooms from a confined 30, 40 square feet to 100, 150 square feet, along with the alterations in design, are indicative of this trend. In addition to the washbasin area, closet area, and wet bath area, spaces like dressing areas, rest or reading spaces, etc., are also finding their place in bathrooms.
The washbasin area, once confined to a width of one and a half to two feet, is now being designed with a length of four to five feet, incorporating a dressing area. Wall-mounted concealed closets for added convenience, bathrooms equipped with Jacuzzis, bathtubs, showers, etc., are the new trend.
Bathrooms that seamlessly integrate nature, ensuring natural light and ventilation just like any other room, are the latest trend. An increasingly popular design approach involves keeping the washbasin and bath area open, while ensuring privacy for the closet area by enclosing it with a glass/fibre door.
Spacious granite slabs are being used as countertops in the washbasin area, incorporating counter-top and counter-down washbasins, and installing large mirrors to enhance the functionality of the dressing area. Dress shelves and cosmetic trays are provided nearby. The wet area prioritizes comfort with hot/cold water bathtubs and large shower panels.
Today, large windows have replaced the ventilation openings that were common in bathrooms before. Privacy is ensured by using frosted glass or wooden louvres at the bottom section of these windows. Skylights are also incorporated at the top of the bathroom walls to allow natural light while maintaining privacy. The design trend also includes incorporating green courtyards as an integral part of toilet/bathrooms. Abundant ventilation and natural light in such bathrooms truly set the new generation homes apart.
