The budget is often the prime factor that topples the dream and expectation of a common man who wishes to build a small house of his or her own. The construction costs have been skyrocketing over the years forcing people to give up on this dream. The budget might have soared by the time the construction was completed. However, this budget-friendly house at Ayathil in Kollam, Kerala, proves that you can build a comfortable house with all facilities without burning a hole in the pocket. The construction of this house, including the structure and furnishing, was completed on an affordable budget of Rs 22 lakh.

At a glance, this structure looks like the 3 D model of a house that is still in the planning stage. The traditional sit-out, slope roof and pillars make the elevation look elegant. The truss roof, meanwhile, has been paved with roofing tiles. Besides, a layer of TKT panelling too has been done beneath it.

Building the structure using mud-interlocked bricks helped in keeping the expenses at bay. Moreover, the structure could be built easier without using too much concrete. The plastering and even the putty painting too could be avoided. These mud bricks are sturdy and could be used to build two-storey structures. TKT panelling has been used on the ceiling inside the house. Besides acting as an attractive designer element, this also helps reduce labour.
As the owner has another house, this is used as a weekend getaway. Designed in 1300 sqft, this charming abode has a sit-out, living area, dining space and two bath-attached bedrooms.

The dining table, meanwhile, can accommodate up to four persons. A small wash area has been arranged close to this space. The kitchen is minimal as it isn’t used regularly. A quaint breakfast counter, cupboards done in MDF, a crockery unit near the stove and a washing space are part of the kitchen. The bedrooms are simple yet elegant with sliding wardrobes, cots and attached bathrooms. Besides, a separate dressing space is added in the master bedroom.
