Waking up to the chirping sounds of the birds and the beautiful views of the serene river would be the dream of most people. Dr. Cyril and Dr Joyce’s grand mansion built in 7000 sqft, stands majestically on the banks of Manimalayar River in Thiruvalla, Kerala. It was architect couple Lijo and Reny who designed this amazing abode as per the wishes of the family.
Walls built using hard rocks are visible amid the lush greenery that surrounds the area. Meanwhile, the architects have followed the philosophy that the real soul of a house should be in the interiors. The house has been turned into a meditation space where you unwind after a day of hard work.
The entrance area of the house faces the west. There are lots of trees and greenery around the house to effectively block the harsh sun rays from here. Meanwhile, the east side of the house that faces the river is the most vibrant part of the house. Here, the elevation has been uniquely designed to receive the cool breeze and the sunshine. A perforated grille has been installed here for added security. You could enjoy the magical beauty of the calm waters of the river if this grille is opened.
Instead of the regular entrance door, you could enter the house through a rock-paved corridor. There are plants and trees on one side of the corridor making it extremely beautiful and cool. This corridor leads to the formal living area that stands out for its minimal elegance.
The main entrance door which is around nine feet tall too leads to another corridor. Interestingly, corridors like these are what connect the areas in the interiors. There is a quaint courtyard decorated with indoor plants on the right side of this corridor. An infinity pool too has been arranged here.
Interestingly, a painting drawn by the architect adorns the wall in the family living area. A wash area has been arranged in the nearby courtyard. The open kitchen is close to the living area. The spacious kitchen has a breakfast table, tall unit, in–built oven, dishwasher, store area, work area, and an open dry area too.
The main dining area has been designed as a semi–outdoor space that allows mesmerizing views of the river. This gives a unique ambience to the dining area during different times of the day.
A study space is arranged at the landing of the staircase. There are two bedrooms, a cosy family living area and an open terrace on the upper floor. Interestingly, there aren’t any TV units anywhere on the ground floor. The family says that this helps in nurturing warm family bonds. So, the TV unit is installed on the upper floor.
The four bedrooms in the house face the river. The bedrooms are simple with glass doors to enjoy the beautiful view. Meanwhile, the head side walls are adorned with paintings done by the architect couple and their daughter. Besides, there are spacious wardrobes and attached bathrooms with mini–courtyards in the bedrooms.
The family is delighted that their brand-new house is the perfect place to enjoy a calm life amid serene nature.
