It’s trendy to be traditional. Check out this Kozhikode home for proof

All it took was eight months to build the 1,250 sq ft structure on five cents of land in East Hill, Kozhikode.

Rajesh Warrier wanted a house that would be well within his budget. The preference was for a single-storied structure in traditional Kerala style. Budget-specialist, designer Sajeendran Kommeri, rose to the occasion and built a beautiful house for Warrier. All it took was eight months to build the 1,250 sq ft structure on five cents of land in East Hill, Kozhikode. Three bedrooms, a living-dining, bathroom, and kitchen are the highlights of the dwelling.

A sit-out in typical Kerala design greets you as you walk up to the house. The area, in reality, a long and spacious verandah. This was exactly what the owner wanted. Its roof has been concreted. Wood-finish plastering and matching paint make the exterior look neat. A quick look gives one the impression of a design done in wood. The structure has a flat roof over truss with tiles laid on it. The roof tiles keep the insides cool.

There are no lavish or showy design elements inside. But there are touches of artistry and aesthetics at special points. One such element is a highlighter design done on the walls in the bedrooms. The living room holds a showcase built-in mica and plywood boards where the TV unit finds its nook. The yellow highlighter wall in the living section peps up the effect of the space.

The living-dining section has been designed in the open style.

The living-dining section has been designed in the open style. The square-shaped dining table can seat four and is very simple in design. A small area close to the dining space has been converted into a room for prayers. Economically priced vitrified tiles have been laid on the floor. Almost all the furniture is new and the absence of confining walls gives the effect of roominess.

The kitchen white and maroon in theme, though simple, look elegant.

Of the three bedrooms, only the master room has an attached bathroom. One of the walls, painted in maroon is the highlight here. The wardrobe in the kids’ room has been painted in light blue.

Some cost-effective measures effected:

Clear and precise planning

Non-stop work for eight months

As the soil was hard and firm no extra cost was incurred on foundation

Wood finish instead of wood used inside
