We love wood houses, they feel so back to earth and natural. So it’s pretty unsurprising that this house made of wood in Ooty is stirring up a sudden interest in wooden construction among tourists thronging the hill station.
Owned by George Thomas, Mel Kavvatti village is entirely built in Canadian pine wood, except the bathrooms. Thomas says that the wooden planks were cut according to the measurements of the house design at a wood factory in China and shipped to India. These wooden planks were then combined in the shape of a house at the site.
One of the most interesting features of this 2,000 square feet house is that it took only two weeks to complete it. Cement, sand and steel bars were not used in the construction. This house can be transported to a different location as it is.
In 2014, Thomas had built a wooden house in Cochin. He says that a 600 square feet wooden house would cost up to Rs 10-12 lakh. Thomas also vouches for the strength of these wooden houses, which he claims would stand strong for at least 100 years.
