Liverpool: Alison McGovern, UK's Minister of State for Work and Pensions, donned a traditional Kerala sari at an Onam celebration in Liverpool, captivating the attention of social media. Pictures of the minister in the elegant attire at the event, organized by the Wirral Malayali Community, have gone viral.

The event was presided over by Jaswin Kulangara, President of the Wirral Malayalee Community. Malayalam film star Ritu Manthra enchanted the occasion as the chief guest. Other attendees included Secretary Sibi Sam Thottathil, executive committee members Preethi Dileep, Joshi Joseph, Alex Thomas, Sriprya Sreedevi, Lesitha Basil, Manoj Thomas Olikkal, Linson Livingston, Biju Joseph, Noel, Anto, Shibi Lonappan, Juby Joshi, Sony Jibu, Frida Punnen, Shiny Biju, Salahudeen Oruvil, Rekha Rajmohan, Ruban Darvin, and Geomol Joby.

Minister Alison McGovern expressed her gratitude for the significant contributions made by the Malayali community in the UK's social service sector. Following the inauguration, the celebrations continued with a captivating musical night featuring playback singers Gokul Harshan and Rakhi Mithun.

The event also honoured UK-based Malayalam YouTuber Tinto George, students who achieved high academic excellence, and the winning team of the Third Division Cricket tournament.

In England, Onam is celebrated with various cultural events, traditional food, and festivities. The Malayali community comes together to participate in activities like Pookkalam contests (flower carpet), Onakalikal (traditional games), and Vallamkali (boat racing) among others. They also indulge in traditional Onam cuisine, including the famous Onam Sadhya, a grand feast served on a banana leaf.
