In a photo shoot for the cover of Vanitha magazine, actress and fashion designer Poornima Indrajith posed in a violet Banarasi sari which is over 30 years old. The attire has been upcycled without losing its traditional hues while exuding modern values.
"Everyone has an emotional attachment to the bridal attire. There are many girls who come to Pranaah (Poornima's designer boutique) to transform their mothers' wedding saris into gowns. The artisans and the methods of the weaving of old Banarasi saris do not exist today. Designs too have disappeared. But many people in north India possess such kind of saris. I try to collect them and will be slightly altered to make them fit for the new generation. This sari is the one which has been recreated in that manner," Poornima told Vanitha.
Poornima has shared the photoshoot pictures on her social media handles. Along with the pictures, the actress wrote that the charm of the tradition, heritage and memories that fill the vintage weaving have always awed her.
