Union finance minister Arun Jaitley announced a slew of measures to improve the country's transportation sector.
Here are some of the key points from Budget 2018.
- The government will expand the capacity of airports by five times to cater to over one billion trips a year.
- To bolster regional air connectivity, schemes will be introduced to connect 56 unserved airports and 31 unserved airpads.
- The government also plans to renew multiple stretches of rail tracks spanning up to 36,000 kilometers.
- All trains are to be provided with WiFi, CCTV and other state-of-the-art amenities.
- In a move to ensure rail safety, the finance minister announced the elimination of 4,267 unmanned railway crossings.
- The budget proposals also include plans to redevelop 600 major railway stations.
- A capital expenditure of Rs 1.48 lakh crore has been earmarked for Indian Railways.
- National highways exceeding 9000 kilometer will be completed in the next financial year.
- "To secure India's defense, we are developing connectivity infrastructure in border areas," Arun Jaitley added.
