What would you do if you find that your vote has already been cast by someone else? If you find yourself in such a situation, you should immediately bring the matter to the attention of the presiding officer of the polling booth.

In such a case, the officer may ask you questions to confirm your identity. Once he/she is convinced that your identity is genuine, the officer will give you a ballot paper marked 'Tendered Ballot Paper' and voting on it is called a 'Tendered Vote.' This cannot be done on the electronic voting machine.

Once the voting is over, the presiding officer presses the close button on the control unit. A machine can record up to 3,840 votes. This will more than suffice because a polling station has been set up for not more than 1,500 voters.

Even if a voting machine conks midway, voting can continue with another balloting unit. The votes cast hitherto will be safely recorded in the control unit's memory.

Those who have been assigned election duties and some other sections of the public approved by the election commission can cast their votes by post.

As many as 22.3 lakh balloting units, 16.3 lakh control units and 17.3 lakh VVPAT machines are being used for the ongoing 2019 Lok Sabha polls. These machines and postal ballots are kept in a strong room until the day of counting.
