Kottayam: Those travelling with more than Rs 50,000 in hand may need to show proof of its source. The Election Commission (EC) directive is an effort to curb influencing voters with money and other incentives as the Lok Sabha election process is under way.
Every constituency will have three teams of flying squads. They have the right to inspect any vehicle. District borders will see most inspection.
The squads can confiscate anything in huge amounts that could be used to influence voters. They can take away cash without source above Rs 50,000. Liquor, gold or anything that could be traded for votes can be attached.
Bank passbooks or ATM receipts can be shown as proof for big amounts withdrawn. Cash from real estate transactions or similar deals also should have details concerning them.
Stopping squads from performing search or mere non-cooperation is a non-bailable offence. Case for obstructing official duty could also be registered.
Approach Collector
The district collector should be approached to claim back cash thus attached. The collector will forward the case to a court if not approached or proof of source is not shown. The collector has the right to extend deadline for the same.
India's seven-phase general election starts on April 11.
