K C Venugopal has had an enviable rise in the Congress of late with party president Rahul Gandhi picking him for plum posts.
A confidant of the party chief, Venugopal was on Wednesday appointed AICC general secretary in charge of organisation, replacing Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot. The Alappuzha MP's tactical interferences in Karnataka and Rajsthan post the assembly polls there seem to have paved way for his appointment for the key post.
Venugopal speaks to Onmanorama in a brief telephonic interview from Bengaluru, his first after the crucial appointment.
What's your tasks as the general secretary in charge of organisation?
My primary responsibility will be to take out the message of the party president all over the country. I hope to do it with utmost responsibility.
How do you look at the new post?
My responsibilities in the party have increased (Venugopal is also the general secretary in charge of Karnataka).
Did you have any clue about the latest appointment?
Not exactly. However, I was told by the party president that he has kept something ready for me.
Will you contest the Lok Sabha polls this time?
My workload has actually increased. A decision on my candidature will be taken by the party president.
You are in Bengaluru. What's the latest news from Karnataka's political circles?
I'm here to attend a meeting about our poll preparedness.
What about the seat sharing with your ally JD(S) in Karnataka?
We are yet to start the talks.
