Thrissur: Joseph George, a class 12 student from Kannur, could be a priest in the next 13 years. He may actually become a clarinet maestro in cassocks if he chooses to hone his talent along with the pursuit of spirituality.
A student of Don Bosco School, Mannuthy, here, Joseph is into his third year of seminary life. On Saturday, he won ‘A’ grade in clarinet/bugle contest in the 58th State School Kalolsavam here, despite attending the coveted event on an appeal.
Joseph started training in clarinet two years ago under Fr Dominic and Francee at Don Bosco. He practices every morning.
Hailing from an agrarian family at Iritty in Kannur, with no background in music, his interest in musical instruments started with keyboard. Apart from clarinet, he also plays keyboard and trumpet.
At the state Kalolsavam he played a piece in Hamsadhwani raga in Carnatic music, ‘Everynight in my dream’ from film Titanic, ‘Thank you Lord’ and Despacito.
Joseph said he had to file an appeal against the results in the district youth festival after some issues with the mike affected his performance. This time, at the state meet there were only two contestants playing clarinet and 10 with bugle. The contest is held together.
Joseph is of the view that it is better to conduct separate contests for the two instruments as they are different in nature. He said many of the contestants and even the jury shared the opinion.
Joseph’s father Georgekutty is a farmer and mother Anjana, a homemaker. He has two sisters – Marya and Emilin, and a brother – Dominic.
