Savior Rachubka confident of Blasters ending goal drought

Paul Rachubka's valiant effort proved decisive as Blasters managed to salvage a goalless draw against Jamshedpur FC last week.

Kochi: Paul Rachubka emerged as an unlikely hero for Kerala Blasters in their Indian Super League (ISL) home match against Jamshedpur FC last week.

In a display of great agility and concentration, he stretched to his left and punched away a mighty close-range header by Kervens Belfort in the dying minutes of match. In the end, his valiant effort proved decisive as Blasters managed to salvage a goalless draw.

“I took four strides towards my left to positon myself to save that shot. I kept an eye on the player and the ball until I palmed the header way. Had I taken a wild dive, I would have missed the ball,” Rachubka, recounting the stunning attempt, said.

“After the match, I watched the video of that save with teammates and felt extremely happy. If it had gone past me, we would have lost the match. It is not easy to play for 90 minutes without conceding, but I thoroughly enjoy such a challenge,” he said.

“Sometimes, keepers may find it physically impossible to stop a shot. It's part and parcel of being a goalkeeper,” the 33-year-old, who has had spells with Manchester United Huddersfield Town, Blackpool, Leeds and Oldham Athletic in the English Football League, said in a philosophical tone.

Goal drought

When asked about the team’s inability to find the back of the net, Rachubka said: “We have exceptionally talented strikers in our squad. I’m certain that they will make amends in the upcoming matches. But I can’t’ tell how we are going to do that. The coach will have specific tactics and strategies for each match, and it won’t be revealed until we take the pitch.

"The unflinching support of fans will prod us to secure full points in our next tie against Mumbai City FC. We have a very good defense. Overall, the team is showing improvement with each game and it is a great sign,” he added.
