This traditional South Indian soup not only warms the body but also brings with it a wealth of health benefits, making it the perfect elixir to combat the winter chill. It aids in weight loss and the anti-oxidants in it boosts immunity. It’s also good for stomach-related ailments.
Ingredients
1 cup horse gram
1 spoon of coriander powder
1 teaspoon Bengal gram dal
2 sprigs of curry leaves
4 dried red chillies
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 piece of asafetida
1 teaspoon pepper powder
¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
1 tomato
1 ball (gooseberry-sized) of tamarind
Preparation
Soak the horse gram in water overnight
Pressure-cook it until soft and set it aside
To prepare rasam powder, heat ghee in a pan
Add Bengal gram dal, cumin seeds, coriander powder, red chillies, curry leaves, and pepper powder
Roast the mix and finely grind it
Soak tamarind in water
Boil the same after adding salt (as required) and turmeric powder
Add a small piece of asafetida
Once the tamarind gets soft and mushy, add the cooked horse gram to it after mashing it well
Add tomato slices also
Blend this mix well
Take some gravy out of the rasam, mix it with the rasam powder and pour it back
Let the horse gram rasam simmer on low heat, allowing the flavours to meld
Just before serving, sprinkle chopped curry leaves or coriander leaves for a burst of freshness
