Mackerels are loaded with omega 3 fatty acids and other essential nutrients. The fish is part of Kerala's traditional cuisine and usually, fatty fish like this are cooked into spicy curries, fried or cooked in cooked in thick coconut gravy.

Ingredients
½ kg mackerel
Mustard seeds as required
Curry leaves as required
8 green chillies
2 ginger pieces
2 garlic cloves
30 shallots
Salt as required
½ tsp turmeric powder
1 coconut (grated)
Pepper powder as required
½ tsp fennel powder
Malabar tamarind as required

Preparation
Clean and mackerels and cut into small pieces
Heat an earthen chatty and pour half glass water
Add turmeric powder and salt as required
Into it add the fish pieces
Turn off the flame when the fish pieces are cooked well
Now crush the green chilies, ginger, garlic and shallots
Into the grated coconut, add fennel powder, pepper powder, turmeric powder, salt, crushed shallots mixture, curry leaves, Malabar tamarind
Mix well
Heat coconut oil in a pan
Splutter mustard seeds
Add the coconut mix
Sauté until the raw smell is gone
Into it add the cooked mackerels
Mix well for at least five minutes
Delicious mackerel thoran is ready.
