Unlike the regular sambar, vegetables aren’t added in this special killi sambar. Loaded with flavours, this sambar can be enjoyed with dosa, idli and rice. Check out the recipe of killi sambar that could be cooked pretty easily.
Ingredients
15-20 shallots
½ onion
1 tomato
1 cup toor dal (cooked)
Tamarind water (made from a gooseberry sized ball of tamarind)
½ tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp sambar powder
8-10 dried chillies
½ tsp mustard seeds
½ tsp fenugreek
¼ tsp asafoetida powder
1 ½ tsp coconut oil
Coriander leaves
Salt as required
Preparation
Heat oil in a pan and splutter the mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds
Into it add the asafoetida powder and split dried chillies
Sauté until these ingredients turn fragrant
The unique flavour of the roasted dried chillies should stand out
Now add the shallots and onion
Sauté well
Now add the tomato and sauté until it is softened
Into it add salt, turmeric powder and sambar powder
Mix well
Add the boiled toor dal
Pour water as required
Into it add the tamarind water as well
The sambar should be a bit loose and watery
Garnish with chopped coriander leaves when the sambar boils nicely
Allow it to boil for a minute more before turning off the flame
