With mercury levels rising in Kerala, the India Meteorological Department has issued several alerts for districts across the state over the past few weeks. The mercury levels are expected to rise by 2-4 degrees Celsius on most days, as indicated by the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority.
High temperatures, sunstroke, dehydration, and various health issues can arise during elevated summer heat. In this context, the KSDMA has issued several warnings and guidelines to ensure proper hydration. Here are some key points from their guidelines to help you stay hydrated and healthy:
- Consume maximum purified water. Keep yourself hydrated even if you don't feel thirsty.
- Refrain from consuming dehydrating beverages such as alcohol, coffee, tea, and carbonated cold drinks during the daytime.
- Consume plenty of fruits and vegetables. Encourage the use of ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) and other replenishing fluids.
- Educational institutions should ensure that students have access to clean drinking water and proper ventilation in classrooms. During exam periods, students should be allowed access to water and proper breaks.
- Online food distribution by vehicles during the afternoon (11 am to 3 pm) should ensure the safety of delivery personnel. Instructions such as wearing protective clothing and obtaining permission for short breaks during travel should be followed.
- Travellers should stay hydrated and rest during the hottest hours. Consideration should be given to avoiding long-term exposure to the sun.
- During extreme heat conditions, wild animals and birds may struggle to find water. Citizens should be considerate and provide water sources for them.
- Utilize water carefully to prevent shortages and store rainwater whenever possible. Encourage water conservation practices.
