Kerala’s own idichakka or tender jackfruit has been gaining incredible popularity around the world. The price of a tender jackfruit in countries like Qatar and United Arab Emirates shot up to Rs 200. Meanwhile, it costs between Rs 40-50 in Kerala.
The tender jackfruit tree continues to bloom due to favourable weather conditions. Earlier, farmers were eager to sell ripened jackfruits. However, now, they are selling tender jackfruit in huge numbers as its demand keeps soaring in international market. There are agents or middle men who purchase tender jackfruits in bulk and export to foreign countries. Tonnes of fresh tender jackfruit are exported from Palakkad, Thrissur, Malappuram and Kozhikode.

Organically grown tender jackfruit is enjoyed by vegans as an alternative for meat. Loaded with energy, carbohydrates, fibres, beta carotene, vitamin B, calcium and iron, tender jackfruit is a wholesome dish. Moreover, it contains anti-oxidants that can boost immunity. Tender jack fruit is excellent for diabetic and cholesterol patients. It help cleanse the gut and boost immunity. Different types of dishes like thoran (stir fry), yoghurt gravy, pickles, chutney and cutlets could be made from tender jackfruit.
