Thiruvananthapuram: When the whole world is turning organic or at least leaning towards organic trends, how could Pathayam Restaurant of CV Gangadharan stay aloof? The chain of restaurants that started offering nature-food in Kozhikode, Thrissur and Kudappanakunnu has started the first organic restaurant in the state, near gate no.4 at the Secretariat. The restaurant claims that it sources certified organic vegetables from Bangalore and Ooty. Tea and Coffee is replaced with Jappy, a concoction that does not use sugar, coffee, tea or milk. Instead Jappy is the extract of fenugreek, cardamom, coriander, cumin and dry ginger fried separately and cooked in boiling water. Breakfast is an assortment of sprouted pulses, grated carrot and scrapped coconut all topped with some lemon juice. This 'breakfast' can set you back by Rs 50. Those who feel that they need more to start the day can order a banana with the breakfast! If you are wondering how organic the lunch would be, you can chomp on a mix of beaten rice, grated carrots, tomatoes, sprouted groundnuts, scrapped coconut, pepper, jaggery and lemon juice sprinkled on top. The conventional buttermilk is not available here. Instead you can have green mangoes and coconut milk blended together. The restaurant starts at 8 am and closes by 10 pm, and it has about 70 organic ‘delicacies’ to offer. One can also purchase books as well as organic toys from here. It was inaugurated by CM Oommen Chandy, his wife Mariamma Oommen and minister KP Mohanan.
