After 20 years gap?
I did films for only 2 years, between 2000 and 2002 to be exact. That too a mere 7 films. And there were tw or 3 serials too. After marriage, no one approached me with roles. Back then I had decided not to act post marriage. Then of course I became busy with children and other responsibilities. But those close to me knew I will be back in films. That’s how much I love films. I believed that sooner or later I will be approached for roles that suited me. ‘Virus’ was offered to me by Aashiq Abu and Rima Kallingal. That was my comeback film after 18 years.
The first film in Bollywood
Since I come from a film family, naturally expectations are high. But thankfully I don’t have that pressure when I act in other language films. Along with a new language, I was able to learn a lot of new things with this film. I consider myself a newcomer who is eager to learn with each film. The director will only be looking at you in the capacity of an artist. I was able to enjoy and experience the changes that have happened in cinema in the last 18 years. The shooting was at Fort Kochi and the film handled contemporary issues as well as love, family, friendship and secularism. And the film has also captured the beauty of Fort Kochi in detail.
More other language films?
I am listening to a lot of stories from Malayalam and other language films. I want to be part of good projects. Also heard the story of a Tamil film. Currently, I am shooting for a Hindi web series for Netflix.
About ‘Thuramukham’
It was a character that was immensely satisfying. I was able to do the younger (35 years) and older (65 years) versions of the character. For that, I was required to lose and gain weight. ‘Thuramukham’ will be part of history. Director Rajeev Ravi is someone who works without compromising on his craft. I am waiting for its release and also, anxious to see whether I got it right.
You wear many hats (dancer, television host, fashion designer, actor, model). Which is your favourite?
I want to be known as an artist. It’s acting which gives me a lot of joy and the above-mentioned facets are also important in cinema.
Do you discuss Indrajith’s performances with him?
I am a fan of Indrajith. The acting he started in his 20s continued to remain strong in his 40s. It is always fortunate to be able to do a variety of roles as an actor and win over the audience. Pius in ‘Classmates’ is someone we are all familiar with. Indran was able to do so many such relatable characters on screen. And the audience loves seeing him in such characters.
What was Indrajith’s opinion about ‘Cobalt Blue’?
He is very supportive and told me that the film had a South American feel. He said they were able to handle a sensitive subject beautifully. We obviously have a comfort space since we come from the same profession.
Your parenting videos were hugely popular…
The world has become smaller. And children can access everything at their fingertips now. Important thing is to see whether they are using it judiciously. Parenting cannot be done with a rule book. Children’s safety is the parent's responsibility. We are aware of that fact. We believe in friendly parenting.
