One misstep could have doomed ‘Rekhachithram’: Manoj K Jayan

Manoj K Jayan is an accomplished actor who has made his mark in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Bollywood cinema. Through memorable films like 'Perumthachan,' 'Sargam,' 'Anandabhadram,' 'Chamayam,' 'Pazhassi Raja,' and 'Kaliyachan,' he has delivered outstanding performances, both as a protagonist and an antagonist, leaving an indelible impression on Malayalam cinema.

Recently, Manoj played a powerful character, Vincent, in the film 'Rekhachithram,' directed by Jofin T. Chacko, with Asif Ali in the lead role. Speaking about the project, Manoj revealed that he immediately agreed to it after hearing the story, which beautifully intertwines history and the present. In an interview with Manorama Online, he shared that the brilliant script is the true star of the film. He also lauded the performances of his co-actors, especially Asif Ali and Anaswara Rajan, for their commendable contributions to the movie.

Reflecting on his journey, Manoj fondly recalled the time when 'Kathodu Kathoram' was being filmed as he was stepping into the industry. For the younger generation, this movie might seem like an old period film, but he remembers reading Nana magazine’s coverage of it back then. Directed by Bharathan and starring Mammootty, the film left a profound impact on him. Acting in a Bharathan film had been a dream, one he fulfilled two years later.

He nostalgically spoke about Mammootty’s character Louis, Saritha’s role, the picturesque Malakkappara, the church, and the songs in 'Kathodu Kathoram,' all of which evoke a deep sense of warmth and nostalgia. Manoj praised Jofin’s courage in attempting a film like 'Rekhachithram,' calling it a venture that required immense precision, as a single misstep could have led to failure.

Speaking about Asif Ali, Manoj noted that Asif has been delivering remarkable films lately. He described Asif’s performance in 'Rekhachithram' as outstanding and referred to him as a gem—a kind-hearted and loving young man. While they didn’t share many combination scenes, they often had engaging conversations during breaks. Manoj recalled a heartwarming moment when, after wrapping up his scenes, Asif ran to hug him, expressing regret about not having more opportunities to work closely together. Manoj reassured him, saying they would meet again, cherishing the strong bond they formed during the shoot.
