2024 has been an incredible year for Malayalam cinema, marked by standout performances and impressive box office runs. Basil Joseph and Naslen had remarkable years, earning both critical acclaim and commercial success. Basil, who has maintained his "boy next door" image, delivered some solid performances this year. His films like 'Jan E. Man', 'Palthu Janwar', 'Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey', and 'Falimy' had already drawn crowds to theatres last year. This year, Basil continued his winning streak with movies such as 'Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil', 'Nunakkuzhi', and 'Sookshmadarshini'. Additionally, he played key roles in hit films like 'Varshangalkku Shesham', 'Ajayante Randam Moshanam', and 'Vaazha'.
Rather than playing larger-than-life characters with supernatural abilities, Basil chose to explore unique roles that suited his strengths. His portrayal of the negative character Manuel in 'Sookshmadarshini', who is villainous with a touch of humor, won the hearts of both the audience and critics. Basil Joseph truly deserves the title of box office star of 2024, with 'Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil' grossing Rs 90 crore and 'Sookshmadarshini' collecting Rs 50 crore.
The year also saw the rise of a 23-year-old actor who once searched for his face in a crowd scene in the Mammootty starrer 'Madhura Raja'. Naslen, who gained fame for his role as a teenager in 'Thanneer Mathan Dinangal', entered the Rs 100 crore club with the blockbuster 'Premalu'. The film, which celebrated love and friendships in metro cities, impressed the Malayali audience and became a massive hit.
Naslen’s transformation from Melvin in 'Thanneer Mathan Dinangal' to Sachin in 'Premalu' showcased his growth as an actor. His unique dialogue delivery, often filled with humour, won over the theatres, leaving audiences in fits of laughter. Fans are now eagerly awaiting his upcoming projects, 'Alappuzha Gymkhana' and 'Premalu 2'.
2024 also witnessed several surprise entries into the Rs 100 crore club. Five Malayalam films crossed the Rs 100 crore mark, while seven others grossed over Rs 50 crore. 'Manjummal Boys' made history with a staggering Rs 242.3 crore at the box office. Other notable films that entered the Rs 100 crore club include Blessy and Prithviraj’s 'Aadujeevitham', which grossed Rs 160 crore; Fahadh Faasil's 'Aavesham', which collected Rs 154 crore; 'Premalu', with Rs 136 crore; and Tovino’s 'ARM', which made Rs 106 crore.
Movies like 'Bhramayugam', 'Turbo', starring Mammootty, Vineeth Sreenivasan’s 'Varshangalkku Shesham', 'Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil', Asif Ali’s 'Thalavan', 'Kishkindhakandam', Jayaram’s 'Ozler', and Joju George’s 'Pani' also performed impressively at the box office.
